The popularity of ‘Love Is Blind’ reveals what we’re missing in our lives
Love Is Blind is framed as a social experiment for the Tinder age.
The show is only four weeks from start to finish, so everything happens in a short timespan. There have been many dating shows, even ones.
But it did provide some significant results. And their genuine excitement when they finally met was so palpable you could almost reach out and touch it. There are numerous ways in which the show contradicts its egalitarian title. But largely, it presents love as pretty straightforward, and usually able-bodied, heterosexual, conventionally attractive and slim. Yet we tuned in — because we too crave companionship, and watching the show allowed us all to have an opinion and join a lively conversation.
Something very special happens when a group of friends watch their new favourite show at the same time. Our shared disgust at Jessica letting the dog drink red wine from her glass was just one standout moment in the social media discourse.
